EUROPE

Llegaba ya uno de los platos fuertes de la noche, y es que de alguna manera con EUROPE comenzaban los "cabezas de cartel" del sábado y además era el primer grupo realmente grande (por mucho que nos gusten mucho unos u otros de los anteriores del cartel) y se notó en una afluencia de gente ya mucho mayor, y con unas 5.000 personas aproximadamente con ganas de seguir el buen tono hasta el momento con los suecos. ¿Y qué decir de su actuación?, pues por mi parte dos reflexiones, creo que ambas con las mismas dosis de validez: Por un lado, es obvio que en esta segunda etapa de su carrera son una banda mucho más potente, sólida a nivel musical (en términos de dureza, rotundidad de sonido y demás me refiero), y con un deje más actual en su sonido que ellos defienden a capa y espada, y es tremendamente respetable. Además, esto hace que sus set lists actuales estén ya balanceados en un 60% temas nuevos (y más a punto de sacar su "tercer" disco... de la nueva etapa como digo) y 40% antiguos.

Por otro lado, es un hecho también que por muy buenos que sean en directo, por muy excelente forma en que está la banda en la actualidad (y es que están increíbles, Joey Tempest el primero a nivel vocal), y por muchos temas interesantes que haya en "Start from the dark" y "Secret society", el hecho irrefutable es que el sonido, movimiento y reacción que hubo con los clásicos fue del 90%/10% (ya que estoy con porcentajes) con respecto a los cortes actuales, y eso a ellos mismos les tiene que pesar y mucho. Pero también son honestos con ellos mismos y tienen todo mi respeto por ello, pero no creo que sea acertado que tocando en festivales dejen arrinconados sus temas clásicos en favor de cortes nuevos que, al menos en este tipo de eventos, funcionan lógicamente peor porque pocos los conocen y quieren oírlos en este contexto.

Dicho esto, fue una actuación muy buena aunque me pareció un concierto bastante frío, al menos a nivel de reacción del público (y también hay que comentar que comenzó sonando horrible... que las miraditas de Tempest y Norum al técnico podían pinchar), y es que de verdad que de cómo comenzó con "Last look at Eden", "Love is not the enemy", o "Always the pretenders" (que es excelente, no digo lo contrario) y "Start from the dark" algo más adelante, a la reacción unánime con "Rock the night" o "Cheerokee" (¡que gran canción siempre!, por cierto), distaban años luz. De todos modos, me gustó mucho como quedó en directo el sonido algo más actualizado que le metieron a "Superstitious" o el medio tiempo "Sign of the times" (del mismo disco, "Out of this world"), o la caña con la formación actual (vaya, que era la misma de entonces) de "Scream of anger", el tema más duro que nunca escribió EUROPE (aunque es de Marcel Jakob técnicamente, bajista inicial de EUROPE antes de formar TALISMAN) y que siempre fue mi favorita. ¿Detalles concretos del concierto?, muy bien los 5 instrumentalmente (reverencia siempre para John Norum, y eso que creo que ha perdido en melodía en pos de una busqueda de saturación un tanto exagerada a veces), el pie de micro blanco rememorando viejos tiempos de Tempest (aunque no le dió demasiado juego esta vez) o el teclado en tonos rojos de Mic Micaeli (con el que hubo muchos problemas al principio, motivo que retrasó la actuación unos 15 minutos, ante la impaciencia general).

Al final, lógicamente había que tocar "The final countdown" (como bis junto con "Cheerokee") que, como pasa con todos los grandes temas, quizás en casa cansa, pero en directo cobra otra dimensión y siempre es un placer disfrutarla y bailarla con unos tantos miles de amigos alrededor en tu misma situación. Muy bien, pero siempre con el "pero" de porqué y cuándo perdieron su toque hardroquero y les dejó de gustar su época gloriosa.

P.D. - Y todo esto lo digo porque, en el set list de la banda estaban temas como "Carrie", "Ready or not", "Let the good times roll" o "Seven doors hotel", y al tener que recortar por salir tarde por problemas técnicos, escogieron la opción de dejar fuera estos temas y mantener los nuevos.
