I've really been getting into photography lately....it takes my mind off dealing with mom's dementia for awhile, and I've already had two offers of payment for future photos....knock me over with a feather!

I'm on my 7th digital camera now....my 4th in just the last three years alone! Shocked My last 4 cameras:

Sony Cybershot DSC-P200 (which pretty much SUCKS - no image stabilization, LCD screen is way too small, but it takes kick ass video)

Panasonic Lumix TZ1 - my everyday camera that stays in my purse

Panasonic Lumix FZ18 - an awesome camera overall - 18x optical zoom, but combined with the digital zoom to 115x, the images are noise heavy. But my latest avatar picture was taken with my FZ18 in December.

And my latest camera of 2 weeks - a Nikon D40x D-SLR. I absolutely LOVE it, although I had doubts after a couple of days and almost returned it for the Canon Rebel XTi. But after playing around with it, I've come to LOVE this Nikon!

Here's some pics that I took on my day off on Monday - I went out to one of our larger parks that also serves as a waterfowl refuge - critiques/advice please!

I just LOVE this duck! It's the only one in the park with a puffball head!

Thanks, Giosi! Very Happy

I DON'T recommend Sony....that's for sure. I absolutely LOVE my Lumix TZ1, and before it's all said and done, I may buy the Lumix TZ3 - one of the gals on the Def Lep forum has the TZ3 and she's posted her pics and they look awesome. I think I posted a link to my Photobucket last year showing my ZZ Top pics, but here it is again:

https://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v110/fourt9rkim/ZZ%20Top%208-17-2007/

These were taken with the TZ1, and we were almost in the back of the arena.

I also love the Lumix FZ18 for a more advanced SLR-like camera... it has 18x optical zoom, and lots of features.

And of course, I *LOVE* the Nikon D40x! I chose that over the Canon Rebel XTi because it didn't feel so 'plastic' like the Canon did. But they are both pretty much dead even in reviews, so it really depends on what you are looking for.

Thanks, Teri! It sure is fun! Some people have cell phones attached to their ear, I have my camera attached around my neck! Laughing

Maybe prices will start dropping in February, since new cameras will be announced by the end of this month?

WOW Kim, those are awesome pictures! Smile I am also into photography and strangely enough just gave myself a TREAT a few months ago - a Nikon D80! Too funny because they're very close.

I agree with your notes about Sony's. I've never owned one myself but I hear nothing but grief from the people I know that have. I've always had great luck and pictures with my smaller Olympus cameras.

Keep sharing the pictures with us - you've got a great eye! I"m going to Paris in several weeks (Hi Nath!) and I'm really looking forward to the photo opportunities awaiting me with my new Nikon!

Take care,
Heather Smile

Thank you, Heather! How funny, we both have very similiar cameras! But I find myself using my Panasonic less and less, and using my Nikon more and more! I see though, that I'm going to have to get a longer zoom....I'm spoiled by my FZ18! So I figure with my bonus check from work in April, I'll be ready for that 300mm zoom lens.

My second digital was an Olympus....I really liked that camera, but it was only 4 MP.

I can't wait to see your pictures from your trip! Very Happy

Well, it's been awhile since I've posted here! But I've been out practicing with the D40x quite a bit....visiting our local park several times lately, and tomorrow I'm heading out to our zoo for the first time since I was a kid to practice photographing the animals. But here's what I've been up to lately:

Thanks, Sherrie! It's been a blast for me to do....so much to learn, but it keeps me out of trouble. lol! I'd love to take a class or two one of these days. I may even enter a few photos in our local fair in October just to see what happens.

Do you really want to stay out of trouble? I try, but it always manages to find me lol! I'm sure classes have changed a lot since I took them, but they were really fun, I enjoyed them. You should definitely go for it, you have a talent for it Very Happy

Trouble finds me wherever I go lately. lol! Thank you, Sherrie! I'm actually doing a "Photo of the day" on my MySpace blog, so check it out each day! I do want to take a class one of these days....and I'm actually looking to upgrade to maybe the Nikon D80 or higher.....I knew I should have stayed with purses as an obsession. LOL!

Hey, I have that "purse obsession" too lol! Purses, shoes..yeah Very Happy
I just got my camera back in August and I already want a better one, been looking at them.
I took a few photos the other morning of the woods behind my house, it was very foggy and it looked quite beautiful. I've only viewed them on my camera so I don't know how they look full sized yet.
I'll have to check out your blog, thanks Very Happy

If you're looking at D-SLR's, my personal preference is Nikon. The colors and the image quality just seems crisper and clearer with Nikon. I didn't like the feel of the Rebel XTi when I was shopping around. It felt too 'plastic' to me. Nikon feels solid and sturdy.

Oh man, I used to buy a purse every season....I have so many purses in my closet it's not EVEN funny! lol!

I've always heard Nikon and Cannon were the best. The one I have now is ok, it wasn't very expensive but it's ok for general use. I've used it at 2 concerts and it doesn't take good pictures unless there is a lot of lighting. Most of the pictures turned out much darker looking than it really was.

I've bought 3 purses in the last month, 2 of those in one day lol!

OMG! I've bought more than one purse in one day more than once....especially if the sales are awesome....LOL!!

I used my Lumix TZ1 last year for ZZ Top....we were way in the back and the shots came out awesome. I tried to get shots at Van Halen in November, but the camera nazis were bad. Sounds like they are running amuck at most of the Lep shows so far, too. Evil or Very Mad

I have an old Canon film SLR camera.....used that for many years. But I just like the feel and the vivid colors that I see coming out of Nikons now.

Yes, the camera nazis are horrible at the Lep shows this year. One of my friends bought a new digital the week before she went to see Lep and 15 minutes before they opened the doors at the venue, they were all told NO CAMERAS. They were told one of the bands performing didn't want cameras allowed. Rolling Eyes The rumor was, it was REO Speedwagon, at least that is what she told me. I felt so bad for her, she was so disappointed. We all know Def Leppard doesn't mind cameras, they act like they like having their photo taken. I've had both Sav and Viv pose for pictures for me Very Happy I'm not sure if I will be getting to see them this year yet or not, I hope to go. They are playing 3 hours away in late August. We're going to try to go. My friend that always goes w/ me was in a car accident Sunday so she might not have the money to go this year, she has an insurance deductible to pay.

Oh, by the way, I posted those photos of the foggy woods in my blog, if you want to take a look at them. They aren't anywhere near as good as yours, my camera isn't as nice as yours.

I'll check out your pics tonight!

It seems so ridiculous about this tour this year.....I'd rather REO just drop off the tour.... I have no desire to see them at all. I'm sorry about your friend and her car accident!

I agree, I saw REO last summer w/ them, they're ok but not really my thing. Now, Styx, I missed them, we were stuck in traffic and as we were walking from the parking lot, they were playing their last song, they sounded great.

Thanks, she wasn't hurt seriously, her chest is bruised from the seatbelt and her neck, ribs and back are hurting her a lot.
